Coco Coir Lignin Content Matters

Cultivation directors charged with developing operating procedures are choosing between numerous soilless substrates. Those who have made the wise choice to grow in coco coir are seeing an ever-growing range of coco coir options. The considerations of this choice go beyond quality, consistency, and supply. What ultimately drives replicable high yields occurs at a microscopic level, between the roots and the growing media.

What is Lignin?

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines lignin as a complex organic polymer deposited in the cell walls of many plants, making them rigid and woody.

Coconut husks are comprised mostly of this woody polymer, and are highly resistant to conventional organic degradation. Lignins resilience influences soil microbial activity, providing four main benefits:

1) reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases from soil

2) retaining soluble nutrients

3) promoting soil aggregate formation and stabilization, which reduces soil erosion

4) bioremediation and detoxification of natural and man-made organic pollutants.

Lignin in Controlled Environment Agriculture

Lignin is an important contributor to humus, by promoting fungal growth, and by improving soil aggregation and soil structure. Good soil structure is important for soil ecosystem services such as water and nutrient retention, cation exchange capacity, buffering functions, and protection of soil enzymes which are the engine of nutrient cycling (source). Traditionally, CEA implies the use of inorganic growing techniques. This is true when using inorganic substrates such as stonewool, hydroton, or perlite. However, the high lignin content of coco coir creates a robust ecosystem within the substrate. Growers combining this with precision fertigation are creating a synergistic rhizosphere and optimizing the benefits of organics and synthetics!

Coco Coir Lignin Content

Individual coir manufacturers are relying on various production methods which are degrading lignin content. Buffering coco coir with highly concentrated calcium nitrate is marketed as beneficial. However, these practices are causing the chemical degradation of lignin structure, reducing the air filled porosity and available water content in the final product. Legacy producers are treating coir as a commodity, sourcing raw material which has been left to age for months or even years. They’re treating coir as a byproduct of the palm industry and as time passes, the lignin is slowly decomposing, reducing its beneficial properties.

Lignin in Riococo

Riococo is growing vast Sri Lankan acreage of organically cultivated palm. Our unique manufacturing process is using 100% un-aged material, preserving the naturally occurring lignin-rich fibers and maximizing potential microbial activity. Additionally, our unbuffered coco coir is is allowing the full control of media EC by greenhouse growers.

Cultivation professionals are asking the RIOCOCO team about the various metrics used to describe our coco coir grow bags. One of the most important for root health is air filed porosity (AFP). By the end of this article fruit, vegetable, and flower growers will have a working understanding of what AFP is, how it is measured, and its importance in maintaining a thriving, yield-boosting rhizosphere.

What is Air Filled Porosity?

Much like VWC,  AFP is a common referenced metric in commercial agriculture. Air filled porosity describes the amount of air a given volume of substrate holds when fully saturated. This metric shows the minimum oxygen level a substrate maintains.

How Is AFP Measured?

RIOCOCO uses a standard horticultural research practice to determine the Air Filled Porosity of our coco coir grow bags. Unlike other coco coir suppliers, we publish our AFP numbers. For this calculation we’ll use the published specs of a RIOCOCO 250 gallon grow bag, and the WHC calculated in a previous post:

  • Dry Volume (DV) = 4176 cm3
  • Saturated Volume (SV) = 18000 cm3
  • WHC = 9.553 l

To calculate AFP, we’ll use three variables: SV (Saturated Volume), DV (Dry Volume), and WHC:

  • AFP = [SV – (DV + WHC)] / SV
  • AFP = [18000 – (4176 + 9553)] / 18000
  • AFP = 960 / 3375
  • AFP = 23.73%

Therefore, when fully saturated, the media in RIOCOCO 250 grow bags contains 23.73% Air.

The Importance of AFP

An acceptable AFP is an integral factor of successful IPM procedures. Choosing the correct substrate effectively eliminates the threat of Pythium. According the UC IPM program, at ~30% or higher air content soil moisture conditions are not conductive to infection by pythium.

Choosing an adequately aerated medium is of critical importance when establishing, or optimizing, irrigation practices. Unfortunately, while some coco coir grow bag manufacturers purport to have an acceptable WHC, they’re not illustrating the full picture. As they scale, successful growers are implementing media with precise specifications.  Given the thin margins greenhouse growers face, the wrong decision can have disastrous repercussions down the line.

RIOCOCO has built its business alongside the success of our clients for the past two decades. Our consistent standards and measurable AFP are just some of the ways RIOCOCO helps growers push their yields. Want to learn more? Click here to contact us!

When speaking with growers we’re often asked about the various specifications of our coco coir grow bags. One of the most important for crop steering is volumetric water content (VWC). By the end of this article growers will have a working understanding of what VWC is, how it is measured, and its importance when establishing yield-boosting crop steering practices.

What is Volumetric Water Content?

Much like WHC, VWC is a common term in commercial ag and with researchers. Cornell University defines Volumetric Water Content as “the volume of water per unit volume of soil, expressed as a percentage of the volume” (Geohring et al. 11).

How Is VWC Measured?

RIOCOCO uses a standard horticultural research practice to determine the Volumetric Water Content of our coco coir grow bags. Unlike other coco coir suppliers, we publish our VWC numbers. For this calculation we’ll use published specs of a RIOCOCO 250 grow bag, and the WHC calculated in a previous post:

  • Dry Weight: 2.05 kg (2050g)
  • Saturated Weight: 11.603 kg (11603g)
  • Dry Volume: 4176 cm3 (4.176l)
  • Saturated Volume: 18000 cm3 (18l)
  • WHC = 9.553l

To calculate VWC, we’ll use two variables: WC (Water Content) and Saturated Volume. For water content, we’ll use WHC, which was previously determined  (Saturated Weight – Dry Weight = 9.553l). We then measure the volume of a fully saturated and expanded coco coir grow bag in liters (18l) WHC is calculated by finding the quotient of these two known variables:

  • WHC / (Saturated Volume) = VWC
  • 9.553l / 18l = 0.5307
  • 0.5307 * 100 = 53.1%
  • VWC = 53.1%

This means that when fully saturated, the media in RIOCOCO 250 grow bags are ~53% water.

The Importance of VWC

VWC is integral to crop steering. Smaller dry backs push plants towards vegetative growth, while larger dry backs push them towards generative growth. We can determine the size of these dry backs by finding the difference between the VWC after the last irrigation event of the day and the VWC before the first irrigation event of the next day.

For example, after the final irrigation event on Monday we’re seeing runoff from our grow bags. One can deduce that they’re fully saturated, and therefore have a VWC of 52%. On Tuesday, just before the first irrigation cycle, we take a measurement (either by weight or with a sensor) and determine the VWC to be 22%.

To see how we’re steering the crop, let’s do a bit of subtraction to find the dry back:

52% – 22% = 30%

30% is considered a rather large dry back. This is increasing the EC within the medium, decreasing the overall WC, and pushing the plants toward generative growth.

Precision irrigation practices are key to achieving repeatable yields. Repeatable yields are the key to success in any operation. RIOCOCO has spent two decades developing and improving our coco coir grow bags for horticultural professionals. With inflation driving diminishing prices, do you have room for the time and costs which are part and parcel of using an inconsistent growing media?

Our consistent standards and measurable VWC are just some of the ways RIOCOCO helps growers push their yields. Want to learn more? Click here to contact us!

When speaking with cultivation professionals we’re often asked about the various specifications used to describe our coco coir grow bags. One of the most important, and the basis for further measurements, is water holding capacity (WHC). By the end of this article growers will have a working understanding of what WHC is, how it’s measured, and it’s importance in developing an irrigation strategy.

What is Water Holding Capacity?

Michigan State University defines Water Holding Capacity (WHC) as “the amount of water that a given soil can hold for crop use”. For field-grown crops and lower quality soilless media this is determined by measuring multiple samples.

How Is WHC Measured?

Here we’ll explain how RIOCOCO uses a standard horticultural research practice to determine the Water Holding Capacity of our coco coir.

Unlike other coco coir suppliers, we publish our WHC numbers. As an illustrative example, lets look at the published specs of a Riococo 250 grow bag:

  • Dry Weight: 2.05 kg (2050g)
  • Saturated Weight: 11.603 kg (11603g)
  • Dry Volume: 4176 cm3 (4.176l)
  • Saturated Volume: 18000 cm3 (18l)

Two variables are needed to calculate WHC: Saturated Weight and Dry Weight. Our quality control team ensures the average Dry Weight of  1 Gal PCMs is 395 grams. We then fully saturate and expand the coco coir grow bag before allowing them to drain for 1 hour. Ensuring the bag to field capacity, we weigh it again, determining the Saturated Weight: 2135 grams. WHC is calculated by finding the difference between these two known variables:

  • (Saturated Weight) – (Dry Weight) = WHC
  • 11.603kg – 2.05kg = 9.553 kg
    • 1kg = 1l
  • WHC = 9.553l

The Importance of WHC

The Riococo team has spent two decades working with commercial fruit and vegetable growers who demand precise coco coir specifications for maximizing the yield of their crops.  When you want 2% shots for quick vegetative growth, you know 9.553l * .02 = 191 ml (1 min 55 sec. for a slab with 3x 0.5 gph drip emitters). Does the irrigation manager need 10% shots for generative growth? With Riococo, take that WHC of 9553 ml, move the decimal a space to the left, and set the irrigation controller to provide 955 ml (9 min 33 sec for a slab with 3x 0.5 gph drip emitters).

Our consistent WHC is just one of several ways  Riococo helps growers push their yields. Want to learn more? Click here to contact us!

Cultivation professionals are adopting eco-friendly practices, especially when using coconut coir growing media as their preferred substrate. Increasingly competitive markets are pressuring commercial growers towards increasing yields and reducing overhead while looming climate change demands a mindful carbon footprint.

Carefully choosing crop inputs, equipment, and media has never been more important to effectively grow fruit and vegetables. Synchronizing these implements is integral to the cultivation methods necessary for producing substantial, healthy, and more robust crops. Fortunately, growers using  coconut coir growing media, supplied by RIOCOCO, have one less thing to worry about.

Why is Coconut Coir Growing Media Perfect for Hydroponics?

The 100% organic, OMRI, coco coir growing media manufactured by RIOCOCO is the preferred eco-friendly substrate for growing crops hydroponically. Blending coconut coir fiber with fertigation in mind, RIOCOCO uses a mix of chips and pith. Our coco is providing roots with optimum water levels while effectively aerating the root system with 30% oxygen. We’ve worked alongside industry leaders to determine precise air filled porosity levels – helping growers achieve maximum growth rates  is at the core of what we do.

The natural fibers in RIOCOCO coconut coir growing media also possesses anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties: repelling pests and pathogens while facilitating vigorous growth. What’s more, the pH level of 5.5 to 6.5  of this substrate is the perfect range for allowing elements to be fully available for uptake. Nurseries and propagation specialists are using the coconut coir growing media for propagation!

Coco Coir Improves all Production Methods

Pathogens Mitigated by Air Circulation in the Rhizospere

Organic operations are using RIOCOCO coco coir fiber blended with compost and maintaining excellent  air to water ratios, creating maximum aeration for plant roots. By providing enhanced breathability to to root network, and overall structure to the soil, growers are providing the ingredients for optimum vegetative growth.  With this practice agronomist are achieving similar benefits to those gained when planting directly in the coco coir growing media and irrigating with synthetic fertilizer.

Again, the pH levels of coir come into play as an amendment for organic soil blends. While the pH of peat can be acidic and require additional amendments, coconut coir is a pH stabilizing agent when mixing with compost. In addition, the RIOCOCO coconut coir growing media is providing unique germicidal properties; naturally-occurring organic polymers within the fibers (lignins) help in establishing a symbiotic relationship between the coir and plant roots. Studies show lignins can behave like a biostimulant,  enhancing the plants production of secondary metabolites. These biological processes are improving root architecture and plants natural defense mechanisms

Coco Coir is Eco Friendly

Unlike peat moss, our OMRI-certified, 100% organic, coconut coir is ecologically sustainable. A renewable resource, it is obtained directly from ripened coconut husks. The fibers are also providing an enhanced CEC (cation exchange capacity), suppling nutrient cations within the carbon neutral coconut coir growing media. The high CEC improves availability and uptake of potassium, calcium, zinc, and iron from either the nutrient solution or compost.

An organic and naturally occurring product manufactured from mature coconut husks, coir substrate (or coco coir) is mainly used as a growing media or soilless substrate for horticulture applications. Because it is a coarse material obtained from the husk surrounding the coconut seed, coco coir is renewable and environment-friendly. Also, the coir substrate is suitable for improving plant yield and quality. The growing medium is favored by many gardeners around the world, as it is appropriate for growing different kinds of plants in an easy fast way.

Choose RIOCOCO for growing strawberries in coco coir

Top 4 Reasons to Grow Strawberries in Coco Coir

Other than pure soil, nowadays, you can find numerous other mediums to grow strawberries, like Rock-wool, Perlite, or Bark. However, the best one to grow plants out of all the mediums is the coir substrate. Keep reading this article to know all the reasons to growing strawberries in coco coir:

Reason #1: Optimum Substrate pH

Unlike other mediums, coconut coir has a neutral pH level which is suitable to grow most of the garden vegetables and flowers. Usually, plants grow best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. When you use other mediums to amend a garden bed, an addition of agricultural lime is often necessary in order to combat the acidity. However, with coconut coir, limestone isn’t necessary unless the soil naturally has a higher pH level. Using coco coir results in both monetary as well as labor savings, since you don’t need to purchase further pH amendments nor work them into the soil.

Reason #2: Unmatched Drainage

The moisture retention capacity of coconut coir is very high, especially in quick-draining soils. Since coir breaks down slowly, it creates air pockets in the soil that allow excess moisture to drain away from plant roots. Meanwhile, in order to prevent drainage from occurring too quickly, the coir itself holds onto some moisture so that the soil doesn’t dry out completely. This dual drainage and retention properties of coco coir allow it to improve moisture management in both heavy clay soils and dry, sandy beds.

Reason #3: Consistent Quality and Consistency

The best thing about coco coir is that it comes sans nutrients, and therefore it doesn’t add to the nutrient quality of the soil. Moreover, heavy feeding plants such as vegetables and some flowers need fertilization or compost amendments, but most herbs develop their best flavor in low-nutrient soils. Since coconut coir adds much-needed organic matter to the garden bed, it helps improve the overall quality of the soil over time. Annual coir amendments can result in loose, aerated soil over time, which is the preferred soil quality for most garden plants.

Reason #4: Sustainably Sourced

Once harvested, other growing mediums, such as peat moss, take centuries to regrow. On the other hand, coco coir is completely sustainable: it is a natural byproduct of coconut harvests and coconut trees produce new coconuts every year.

Using RIOCOCO’s compostable coco coir bags in the garden keeps plastic pots out of landfills, where they can take centuries to fully break down. This is the reason why it’s more sustainable to use coir to improve your garden soil.

Coco coir bricks are in extensive use by cultivators worldwide –  the most versatile organic growing medium for plants. The coco coir mix and starter blocks are produced from mature coconut husks, bi products of the palm industry. This sustainable resource is 100% organic, biodegradable, carbon-neutral, and is ideal for both organic, conventional and hydroponic agriculture.

Find the 100% organic and OMRI-approved biodegradable coco coir bricks for optimum plant growth

This efficient plant growth medium is  perfect in many ways for producing a greener environment. These premier quality and super-washed coconut coir bricks from RIOCOCO are the substrate of choice for eco-conscious growers. Blending uniformly cut coco coir husks as an amendment with native soil creates a perfect growth medium for all tropical plants.

Whats The Upside of Natural Coir Bricks From RIOCOCO?

Coir Natural Chip Bricks

RIOCOCO is producing 100% organic, super washed, premier grade coir chip bricks – an excellent growth medium for all tropical plants. They are in use for both soil-based and hydroponic production methods.  Coco coir chips are the perfect material for a balanced compost or even as decorative ground cover. These bricks are composed of equally cut segments of coconut husks. Coco coir bricks for use directly as a substrate are proportionally mixed with large and fine coir chip grades then compressed to form a brick.

But before becoming a block, the coco coir material goes through RIOCOCO’s proprietary 5 times MAXXWASHED process and steam sterilization. This process is producing bricks which retain water, expand to nearly double their compressed size and offer 28% permeability. As an amendment in organic soil it is creating the vital 30% oxygen to roots, without adding expensive, biologically inert clay balls or perlite for aeration.

Coir Natural Mix Bricks

RIOCOCO is producing coir mix bricks without the fine dust found in other brands. 10mm OMRI super-washed materials provide naturally occurring beneficial bacterial such as trichoderma. These micro-organism rich bricks are a superior growth media for conventional and organic agriculture practices – even aquaculture! They’re also in use re-sowing gardens,  in potting mixes, and for lawn revamping techniques.

These organic bricks are the perfect medium for growing crops like berries, vegetables, micro-greens, and flowers. Lignins, natural polymers found in coconuts, provide optimal Air-Filled Porosity (AFP) and Water-Holding Capacity (WHC) for transpiration.  Lignins contain a high percentage of complex oxygen-rich organic polymers, actively maintaining the substrate structure at a microscopic level, and creating a biologically active rhizosphere. This symbiotic relationship is actively preventing pathogens and builds healthy roots, shoots, and fruits.

What Elementary Ways Are Coir Bricks Utilized By Cultivators?

Highly Functional Lining Substance in Planters

Using RIOCOCO coco coir bricks as liners inside containers and hanging planters, allows the gradual release of water to the root network. Moisten the coir brick for 15-30 min, then insert pieces of the saturated coir bricks into the pots. Growers are also blending the expanded coir bricks directly into the potting media for effective plant growth.

Acts as Powerful Vermicompost

Coco coir bricks are also a highly functional organic worm compost amendment! Mixing coir bricks are with other compostable materials,  generates the perfect natural habitat for earthworms. The moisture retentive properties create the perfect zone where worms consume organic humus, creating worm castings – an essential element for living soils.

Is Coconut Coir or Peat the Best Alternative for Hydroponics?

Generally, coco peat or coir is the best-proven alternative to mined peat moss. Therefore, using coco peat or coir can help reduce peat extraction from environmentally sensitive swamps. It is widely used as an effective growing medium. It consistently outperforms other popular brands of coco peat.

The use of coco peat hydroponics increases daily. It is an OMRI-certified organic medium that offers good oxygen and water retention. If you are new to hydroponics, it could be your best choice; because it is similar to soil. It allows growers or cultivators to grow without soil and without buying a complete hydroponic system.

Coco peat is light in weight. It is odorless and easy to handle, so you do not need to worry about pests, weeds or diseases. The best thing about coco peat is that it is uniform in composition. It is 100 percent organic and promotes strong plant vigor and root growth. Absorbing the re-wets and water eliminates the need for wetting agents. Thus, you save a lot of time, energy and money.

You can reduce the frequency of watering sans plant stress, which is the next best thing for using coco peat hydroponics.

Thereby, you can minimize labor costs and plant loss. Also, you can increase the shelf life of plants. In hydroponics farming with RIOCOCO coco coir, you don’t need to check if the substrate is compressing or not because of decomposition, it means your products are not shrinking during the growing cycle.

Hydroponics growers looking for an alternative growing medium having a high water-holding capacity can choose coco peat without any doubt. It has excellent drainage and aeration. Here, we have mentioned some of the reasons for which seedling nurseries, gardens and hydroponics growers choose coco peat. They also use other coir substrates for hydroponics.
