I replace mine every day after cleaning up the kitchen. However, living in the South, I am aware of a consistent odor they gain that is most prevalent during the warmer months of the year. The oder can even survive hot laundering. Perhaps my OCD is showing, but I have found that if I saturate the dishcloth with more water than it can hold and put it in a microwave safe dish and nuke it for two full minutes, I then allow it to airdry until I have enough towels, etc. to make a load and, voila, the odor is GONE! My husband mocked my technique at first until he noticed that the smell has not returned in over a year. Being “more senior” than many folks, this is a simple methods to protect our health that takes very little effort.

I am allergic to tobacco smoke, so I feel your pain. Try this to eliminate as much smokie as possible. Place dishes of white vinegar around each of your rooms and check each day. I suspect that you will be grossed out by how dark the vinegar becomes in just a day. My mother, step-father and his father were heavy smokers and would get together once a week to play cards. Then Mom quit smoking and “got religion” about smoke. Her mother-in-law suggested the vinegar trick; she & I were impressed. I have even seen it work for homes down-wind from wild fires.

The smell of cigarette smoke might be one of the trickiest smells to deal with, because it really adheres to fabrics and surfaces. Here’s some tips for getting rid of the smell of cigarette smoke, depending on what you’re dealing with:
Clothing and fabric – Machine wash item(s) on a cold water cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar.
Carpets, mattresses, and furniture – Sprinkle baking soda on the item, let it sit there overnight, then vacuum it up in the morning. Repeat if necessary.
Walls – Clean walls with a rag soaked in equal parts water and white vinegar.
All over – Be sure to replace the air filters in your HVAC system and clean out the air ducts thoroughly.

Can you please give me a solution for creating a natural Lysol type spray that has a pleasant scent, will kill mold and mildew, and get rid of the odors? I brought the Christmas decorations up from the basement and had to spray the garlands, silk flowers & poinsettia’s, etc with Lysol to try to get rid of the awful smell. Lysol has a bad chemical smell though, and it gave me a headache. I’d really appreciate any ideas on a safe, natural alternative.
